Prof David Crouch Chemist, CBRN & Standardisation Expert

Professor David Crouch is a globally recognised expert in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defence and civil nuclear safety, with over 30 years of experience across the defence, security, and civil nuclear sectors. He currently serves as Head of the CBRN & Survivability Group at Cranfield University, Technical Director at United CBRN Limited, and Visiting Professor at the University of Hertfordshire. David has held senior global product leadership roles at 3M and Scott Safety, where he was instrumental in the development and delivery of innovative respiratory and CBRN protective technologies and hazard management solutions. These roles involved driving product innovation, managing international stakeholder relationships, and advancing critical safety technologies that underpin resilience. More recently he has actively supported EU projects including PEERS and EMBRACE in his capacity as a RAN International Advisor.

As former Chairman of CBRN-UK (2016-2019), the UK industry's specialist CBRN interest group, David continues to champion UK capability through his role as a member of the ADS Council and Security Sector Board. His contributions extend to academia and professional practice, where he is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), reflecting his commitment to teaching, mentoring, and advancing the next generation of resilience and security professionals.

David is a Chartered Chemist (CChem), Chartered Scientist (CSci), and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), as well as a Fellow of the Institute of Civil Protection & Emergency Management (FICPEM), a Fellow of the Emergency Planning Society (FEPS), a Member of the Society for Radiological Protection (MRSP), and a Member of the Security Institute (MSyI). He is also a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), where he contributes to nuclear counter-proliferation research and open-source intelligence programmes, and a Director of the International Society for Respiratory Protection (ISRP), where he advances global standards in respiratory and CBRN protective equipment. Internationally, David represents the UK on BSI committees for Respiratory Protection (PH/004) and PPE (PH/23), and plays a leading role through ISO and CEN committees, including as Chair of CEN Technical Committee 391's Working Group on CBRNe. His leadership and technical expertise have been instrumental in shaping international standards, guidelines, and collaborative frameworks that strengthen resilience, preparedness, and security in hazardous environments.
